Brother Andrew’s 92nd Birthday!

Not your ordinary hero

Open Doors began its journey of serving the persecuted church close to 65 years ago when a young Dutchman was inspired to smuggle Bibles into Communist Eastern Europe.

The young man was hardly aware that this humble beginning would be the start of a mission which, decades later, continues to serve the Body of Christ where faith costs the most. Today, Brother Andrew celebrates his 92nd birthday, and his story continues to inspire a new generation of Christians. He is truly a hero of faith.

“And if I know who our God is, it completely takes away my fear.” – Brother Andrew

In the initial days of the ministry when the Cold War was a reality, Brother Andrew risked his life smuggling Bibles into countries behind the Iron Curtain. Preaching the Gospel was forbidden in the height of Communism, and possessing a Bible was considered a serious crime. However, full of bold faith, he started ferrying Bibles in his blue Volkswagen beetle to believers in these countries who were hungry for the Word of God. Crossing the border with Bibles required immense courage. He often prayed, “Lord, in my luggage I have Scripture I want to take to your children. When you were on earth, You made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind. Do not let the guards see those things You do not want them to see.”

"And if I know who our God is, it completely takes away my fear." -Brother Andrew

The prayer worked miracles, and many a time, despite extensive searches of his car, the border security guards could not see the Bibles that were in plain sight. His daring escapades to bring God’s Word into forbidden terrain led Brother Andrew to be known as God’s Smuggler. His story, published into a book with the same title, became a best seller and is available in at least 35 languages.

The Journey Continues

The work Brother Andrew began so many years ago continues today in more than 60 countries. The next generation of ‘Brother Andrews’ is still smuggling Bibles into regions that are hostile to the Gospel. Open Doors is doing whatever it takes to strengthen and nurture our brothers and sisters around the world, to help them shine a light where God has placed them.

As you hear the stories of courage and resilience from our persecuted family around the world, we pray that your faith will be strengthened. Tune in to a special episode of the World Watch Weekly podcast to celebrate Brother Andrew’s 92nd birthday. You might hear some surprising new things!
