A new religious law is currently up for review before the Constitutional Council of Kazakhstan. If implemented, the new law will allow restrictions on freedom of thought, conscience and belief. Christians in the country are concerned about the new conditions this law mentions concerning Christian activities and meeting places. Local officials already encourage average citizens to have a negative attitude towards Christians, especially next to the border with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The government has also tried to close places of worship.
