Although there is full freedom of religion and much of the population professes to be Christian, the church faces severe persecution from Muslims on the north-eastern border with Somalia. In some areas, an increase in persecution is the result of aggressive evangelism by the church. There is great pressure on Christian leaders in the Muslim-dominated communities and some have been won over by Muslim leaders. Some believers from a Muslim background have also been pressed to return to Islam.
