While the constitution guarantees religious freedom, the Islamic majority are favoured by the government. The atmosphere is becoming more tense in the run-up to government elections in 2009. Radical Muslims continue to bring pressure on Christians, inciting violence and exploiting the law. In 2007 alone, 25 churches were attacked or demolished. Muslim background believers have been intimidated by their families and some have received death threats.
