The country controls access to the Red Sea and is of great strategic importance. Nearly all Djibouti citizens are Muslims, but the government has not imposed sanctions on those of other faiths. The handful of non-Islamic groups must register with the authorities and evangelism is discouraged. There are very few evangelical believers in Djibouti and they are isolated because of pressure from their families. There are reports that some Christians from neighbouring Eritrea fled to Djibouti.
