A communist state with some freedom of religion, the Roman Catholic Church is by far the largest denomination. It is very difficult to register evangelical churches and obtain building permits. House churches are regulated and are not allowed to be within 2 kilometres of another house church. This is a difficult requirement in the congested cities. Periodic harassment of Christians continues.
