These islands in the Indian Ocean form a semi-autonomous territory of Tanzania. While mainland Tanzania is pre-dominantly Christian, 97 per cent of the Zanzibar population is Muslim. Churches struggle to purchase property and be registered, while many Christians are denied employment and education. In 2007 four churches were burned, several pastors were arrested falsely, and a number of Muslim-background believers were kidnapped.
