Elections in 2008 were overshadowed by the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. The government offers very limited protection to Christians, who are considered second class citizens. The blasphemy laws prescribe the death sentence for anyone found to be guilty of insulting Islam or the prophet Muhammad. Life for Christians is fraught with threats, discrimination, harassment, and even murder. During 2007 Christians were more closely monitored and attacks on churches and Christian homes increased.
