ERITREA: Dear Sir, The Eritrean Constitution states that ‘every person shall have the freedom to practice any religion and to manifest such practice’ in Section 4 of Article 19. The Eritrean government is in direct violation of its own constitution in this regard, as it is involved in the unfair treatment of religious believers and churches. On 23 September, the US State Department under the 1998 Religious Freedom Act imposed sanctions for the first time against a country, singling out Eritrea for its failure to address severe violations of religious freedom perpetrated by the state. As of 9 November 2005, it has been confirmed that at least 1,752 Eritrean Christians have been imprisoned solely for their religious beliefs, a number nearly double the documented count six months ago. Although most of the prisoners are members of the independent Protestant churches banned since May 2002, an increasing number of key leaders within the officially registered churches are also being arrested. Eritrea’s Christian prisoners are being held in prisons, military camps and police stations located in at least 12 different locations across the country. Among them are many women, youth and elderly people. We request that all prisoners incarcerated for their religious beliefs be unconditionally released. We also request that the Eritrean government uphold the present constitution and ensure freedom of religion for all Eritreans. We pray for wisdom for your government and for the preservation of your beautiful country. Please be encouraged to act upon the honour entrusted to you by the people of Indonesia, a people to be treated without discrimination. I am writing to you to express my concern for three Christian women who were arrested on 13 May because a Muslim council accused them of attempting to convert Muslim children. The trial that began on 30 June attracted considerable national and international attention, with reports that Islamist militants regularly attended the court hearings, stirring up mob hostility and harassing the women. I am concerned that Muslim militants may have unduly influenced the outcome of the trial. On 1 September, 2005, the Indramayu local court found Dr Rebekka Zakaria, Eti Pangesti and Ratna Bangun guilty of breaching the 2002 Child Protection Law, and sentenced them to three years in prison. Since then, the women’s appeal to the West Java High Court in November 2005 was rejected. All three women are wives and mothers whose children miss them and need their guidance. I respectfully petition your prompt involvement in this case to ensure that the fundamental rights of Dr Rebekka Zakaria, Eti Pangesti and Ratna Bangun are respected. May the women be released unconditionally to their families as soon as possible.
