| On 22 December 1997, 45 Tzotzil Indians were murdered during an armed confrontation in Chenalho, Chiapas, Mexico.Ninety people had been imprisoned for the killings, 83 of them unjustly so.
Six were acquitted and one died, reducing the number of men detained without valid reason to 76.
They are in a maximum security prison serving sentences of 26 or 36 years.
